This chapbook celebrates the gym as a space of longing, transformation, and desire—exploring the unexpected intimacy found among iron, sweat, and human connection. Through witty love letters to gym partners, meditations on the heartbreak of breaking up with your favorite workout spot, and raw reflections on lifting weights, these poems capture what it means to search for connection in the crowded gym where solitude and community collide.
Written through a queer lens, the collection is simultaneously funny, aching, and deeply honest. The poems understand the particular vulnerabilities we expose when we move our bodies—the desire for strength, the longing for recognition, the complicated feelings that arise when we're surrounded by others yet profoundly alone.
Gymlationship reads, in a way, like the diary of a man whose heart yearns for love at may levels, and Turner has this compelling way of enticing the reader through his 1st person voice. When I finished the chapbook, I felt like I had spent time with a special man, in his mind as well as his heart, and it made me yearn as well for the same things. With vivid, heartfelt imagery, the poems connect to that part of yourself that registers longing, love, and a kind of innocence. Focusing largely on visual and tactile moments, Turner reminds the reader how normal it is to want for that one special person who understands. I am sure I will re-read this collection many times.
