In 1959 the Georgia county of Canoochee, Vaughn Denoual arrives at the Beman orchard carrying a past he cannot outrun. Bucky Beman is fighting to keep his family’s land and hard-won dignity intact. Bucky Beman has spent his life learning how to endure the world as it is, not as it should be.

In the quiet spaces between work and watchfulness an intense, forbidden bond between Vaughn and Bucky develops. Old grudges, and dangerous secrets close in around them. The two men find themselves drawn into an uneasy closeness that deepens into something neither of them can safely afford.

But the county is watching. In a place ruled by rumor, resentment, and the sharp edge of racial violence, desire can become a danger, and trust can become a trap. When a storm rolls in and leaves behind more than broken trees, Vaughn and Bucky are forced to confront the cost of love, the burden of memory, and the wreckage left behind by men who believe they own the right to decide who belongs.

Excerpt:

The interior was dim, with shadows crawling along the polished mahogany walls and the deep burgundy carpet. The air was thick with expensive cologne and the tang of whiskey layered against the underlying musk of leather. Plush seats lined the room, their dark, buttery leather creaking quietly as men—rare, well-tailored and hungry—shifted and murmured in private corners. Laughter drifted like cigar smoke, low and husky, sometimes punctuated by the clink of crystal glasses. Somewhere, a jazz piano played just out of sight, the notes weaving through the subdued hush and giving the place an uneasy, seductive rhythm. They came for the company of young, beautiful men. Vaughn had seen many like them, but that night, something shifted.

Sal Vincenzo wasn’t a regular. Vaughn was certain of that. Still, as Sal stepped through the door, he barely glanced around, his gaze sliding over the men and the staff as though taking a silent inventory. He paused just inside, smoothing the lapel of his suit with two slow fingers, before making a deliberate path through the crowd. He crossed the floor with a quiet authority, shoulders back, moving at his own pace as if expecting the room to fall in line behind him. By the time he reached the bar, all conversation in his wake seemed to have softened, as though letting him claim the stage for himself.

To Vaughn, he looked like every other slick, high-class businessman from New Jersey, only sharper. The man was dressed immaculately, superior to the others. He looked sophisticated in a dark blue pinstriped three-piece suit, the cut hand-tailored, the fabric clearly Italian. His shoes’ leather, gleaming as he walked in. He removed his Stetson hat as he crossed the room, setting it on the bar with casual precision before catching Vaughn’s eye with a small gesture.

Vaughn moved toward him. Sal leaned in slightly, one hand resting on the polished counter.

“You’re a fresh face. You new here, blue eyes?” His voice matched the posture, gravel-edged but smooth, confident without swagger. Under the friendliness was something else, a practiced casualness as if he weighed Vaughn’s answer before it came. His gaze lingered in a way that felt like an appraisal, and the words, though simple, carried the hint of someone used to getting answers. He was one of those tough-as-nails kind of men, making Vaughn wonder if he had wandered in by mistake, or if this was someone who always had a purpose behind every question.

“No. I usually work on the weekends.” Vaughn shook his head slowly. Sal had a charm that set him apart from the other hoity-toity men. They usually spoke with plummy voices in singsong manners and looked down their nose at him. “I’m just filling in for Paulie.”

“That explains it.” Sal gave him a quick once-over. “Let me have Ardbeg neat.”

“The single malt scotch? You betcha.” Vaughn smiled, turned, and reached for the green bottle on the top shelf. He presented the bottle to Sal, who simply nodded. He poured a careful measure of the brown liquid into a rocks glass and slid it across.

Sal lifted the glass. “Here’s to ya.” He took a sip, then grinned. “Perfect. Just like Mom used to make.”

Vaughn gave a half-smile. “Swell. Glad you like it.”

Sal nodded, raised the glass, and smoothly slid a twenty across the bar.

“Thank you. I’ll get your change.” Vaughn reached for the bill, but Sal shook his head.

“Don’t bother. That’s for you,”

“It’s a four-dollar drink, sir,” Vaughn said before he could stop himself.

Sal chuckled, already turning away. “And?”

He walked off, leaving Vaughn staring at the untouched change and his own reflection in the glass. For a moment, Vaughn felt as if Sal had peeled back a layer he kept hidden. The crisp bill sat where Sal had left it, but it felt heavier than the whole bar. Vaughn’s chest tightened as he wondered why a simple encounter could shake him, and whether he appeared as uncertain to others as he felt now. He swallowed, pressing his palm to the cool marble, letting the rhythm of the jazz and the dim glow around him steady his breath until the feeling softened and vanished. Then he scooped up the tip, forcing his hands to stay steady, and moved on to the next customer.
